2013 was a year to remember. Especially if you are a red wine producer from Hawkes Bay - or perhaps a red wine drinker from New Zealand. It was relentlessly hot and dry, with the best growing conditions since the famous 1998 vintage in this neck of the woods.
We bottled the Basket press Merlot/Franc and Basket Press Syrah (a first for us at this level), along with the pretty impressive Resolution Merlot in September this year. After a couple of months in bottle to settle down, we thought it was about time to let the world know they are ready to go.
Respected wine critic Raymond Chan has had this to say about the wines:
Basket Press Syrah 2013 - 18/20
"Very full...black-red colour, near impenetrable...restrained fruit aromas of ripe black plums and berryfruit...soft-textured, plush and seamless...Layers of spices, oak cedar and earth unfold ...fine-grained, supple tannins ...a smooth, seamless, fine-grained Syrah"
Basket Press Merlot/Franc 2013 - 18.5/20
"...nose of ripe dark plum and red berry fruits, lifted by aromatic and spicy oak... rich, plush and succulently sweet fruit flavours of ripe dark red plums ... Liquorice and black fruit elements add detail ... fine-grained tannins balancing the fruit richness "
Resolution Merlot 2013 - 19/20
"powerful and deeply concentrated aromas of ripe black berry and plum fruits...aromatic new oak nuances and spice elements ... densely packed ripe fruit flavours of black and dark red berryfruit and plums ... sweet oak and subtle spice elements. ... a very long, black-fruited finish. This is a concentrated, well-structured Merlot "
