The Wines

Our range of wines encompasses several levels of Merlot or Merlot / Franc blends, with the addition of a Syrah from 2012. The main commercial wine is simply known as Merlot / Franc and is the backbone of our production. Above this is our classic Basket Press Merlot / Franc and then the flagship Resolution Merlot, only made in outstanding vintages.

Our top red wines are fermented in small open vats which are traditionally hand plunged to extract colour and tannins from the skins.  The reds remain on skins for a period of post ferment maceration to maximise extraction and stabilise the colour and tannin. They are then pressed off the skins for maturation in French and American oak barrels for up to 12 to 18 months prior to bottling.

Redmetal Hawke's Bay Merlot/Cabernet Franc 2013  4 stars

Full, dark, near impenetrable purple-red colour, youthful in appearance.  The nose is soft and restrained with aromas of sweetly ripe black plums and violet florals, seamlessly entwined with nuances of redcurrants and fresh herbs, revealing a hint youthful reduction.  Medium-bodied, plush, juicy and vibrant fruit flavours of dark plums and dark red berry fruit form a deep core.  The fruit is supported by fine, firm tannins that provide linearity.  Notes of redcurrants and herbs unfold and the mouthfeel is enlivened by bright acidity.  This is up-front and accessible, with the firm tannin line carrying the wine to a sustained, grainy-textured finish.  This is a bright, lively and juicy Merlot-based wine with good underlying tannin line.  Match with barbecued and roasted red meats over the next 4-5+ years.  95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc fermented to 14.0% alc., with hand-plunging and pump-over, the wine aged 6 months in 5% new oak.  17.5/20  Sep 2014  RRP $20.00

98% Merlot and 2 % Cabernet Franc fermented to 14.0% alc, with hand-plunging and pump-over, the wine aged 14 months in oak, 85% French and 15% American, with 25% new.  Dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance.  This has a full, densely packed, harmoniously presented nose of ripe dark plum and red berry fruits, lifted by aromatic and spicy oak.  Cedar and spice elements unfold in waves, and nuances of black fruits with iron-earth add complexing layers.  Medium-full bodied, rich, plush and succulently sweet fruit flavours of ripe dark red plums are entwined with exotic spices and sweet, cedary oak. Liquorice and black fruit elements add detail and interest.  The palate features a plenty of extract, with fine-grained tannins balancing the fruit richness and the wine flows to a very long, lingering dry finish with layers of spice and sweet oak.  This is a plush, well-structured, red plum fruited Merlot-based wine with layers of spice and cedary flavours.  Serve with Middle Easter cuisine, and slow-cooled lamb and game meat over the next 6-8+ years.  18.5/20  Sep 2014  RRP $30.00
